about
(Another sneak preview from our album, Luminous Newts, which will be released July 3.)
I used to work with this spiritually lit-up guy named Ron. I always wondered why he seemed so amazed about life.
One day he told me that a few years before he'd been riding his motorcycle on a winding road, came around a corner, lost control of the bike for some reason and went off a cliff. And died. Paramedics revived him.
He came back with memories of light and wise beings, and a certainty as clearly as you can see your hand, that this life on earth is only a small part what we're about. I don't know about that, but apparently he does.
When Newts co-founder Eric came up with this big, expansive composition that builds and goes soaring, and a lyric idea about the somehow going "up and out," I decided to tell what little I know of Ron's story.
I didn't try to describe what happened "over there." I left that up to the music.
Thea Kelley
(P.S. Was he really "past my prime, out of time"? Nah, that's just me being a songwriter.)
lyrics
Up and Out
by Eric Kampman and Thea Kelley
Up and out now, they said, up and out
so we up and went
now we're up and gone
like a dandelion seed that drifts way up high
like a prayer wheel that spins its gifts to the sky
Where I came from I was past my prime,
into this and that, out of time
on the road one fine day
turned a corner, flew away
so they tell me – I can't say – I was gone
